Small group instruction can feel overwhelming.

You're trying to manage rotations, keep students engaged, gather data, organize materials, and meet different learning needs-all while you're trying to teach a small group.

When the systems aren't working, it can feel like you're spending more time managing small groups than actually teaching them.

I know this because I've been there.

When I first implemented small groups in my classroom, I quickly realized that I couldn't simply put students into groups and expect everything to work.

I had to figure out the systems behind successful small group instruction.

I looked carefully at what wasn't working and build systems around those challenges-including classroom layout, expectations and procedures, meaningful activities, assessment, planning, and ways to collect and organize student progress.

And the difference was incredible.

I went from being constantly interrupted by students in the other groups to having students remind each other what to do and quietly help their neighbors.

I even had students run up to me in the morning asking,

"Are we having Small Groups today?"

When I said yes, they would run to the lockers telling their classmates,

"Hey, we're having Small Groups today!"

Small Group Time became my favorite time of the week.

Not because everything suddenly became perfect-but because my students knew what they were supposed to be doing, they were actively learning, and I could focus on teaching the students in front of me.

But there was another part of Small Group Time that meant even more to me.

I had a student who became frustrated very quickly during work time and would often refuse to work.

She was behind grade level and had become so used to things being difficult that she would sometimes shut down before she even tried.

When I introduced her to our Small Group Time and began giving her reading and math work at her current level, something slowly started to change.

She began participating.

She began experiencing success.

And then one day, I was just about to wrap up her group and call the next group when she raised her hand.

"Can we do one more problem?"

That moment stayed with me.

This was a student who had often shut down before even beginning her work—and now she was asking for more.

That is one of the reasons Small Group Time became so meaningful to me.

It allowed me to meet students where they were, provide instruction and activities at their individual levels, and help them experience themselves as capable learners.

We weren't simply getting through our Small Group rotations. We were working together to help every student move toward their highest learning goals.
