The Benefits Of Small Groups
As teachers, we often hear that it’s important to implement Small Groups in the classroom. But how exactly do Small Groups help students?
Implementing Small Groups in the elementary classroom is a great way for teachers to provide differentiation in the classroom, gives teachers the opportunity for immediate feedback, encourages collaboration, and is a great way for teachers to get to know their students.
Personalized Learning:
Small Groups are an effective way for teachers to provide differentiation to students. By working with a smaller number of students at a time, teachers are able to reach students at their individual levels and tailor their lessons to meet each student’s individual needs.
When students are met at their instructional level, they are more likely to engage in the material, which increases students’ confidence and promotes a deeper understanding of the material. By providing opportunities for students to succeed, teachers increase students’ willingness to participate and take ownership of their learning.
The Opportunity For Immediate Feedback For Teachers and Students
Teachers have the opportunity to receive and give immediate feedback when working with a small group. Teachers are able to catch and correct misunderstandings more quickly, which saves time and student frustration, so students are able to keep making progress.
Once, I noticed one of my students in Small Groups was consistently skipping over the number fifteen when counting. Her voice was so soft, and she counted so quickly, I am not sure I would have caught that by walking around the room and helping students in a whole group setting. It was only when we sat down to work together in a Small Group that I was able to catch the issue and point it out to the student. Once she realized what she was doing, she started to self-correct immediately.
Enhanced Student Engagement
Small groups provide the opportunity for students to work and collaborate with each other. Students can talk through a problem together, help each other find answers and mistakes, and celebrate wins!
A Small Groups setting can also provide some healthy competition between students. I often had students observe other students’ work, and then wanted to try the same type of problems.
Get To Know Students Better
Finally, Small Groups allow teachers to talk with and get to know their students better than if they were only in whole group settings. I loved our Small Group Time and so did my students. This was the time students could ask questions, share their learning, and really make progress towards their academic goals.
It was also the time students shared a little about themselves, helped others, and created a collaborative learning environment.
By incorporating Small Groups into your classroom, you can strengthen the well-being and academic success of your students. By fostering an individualized learning environment, you are empowering your students to become active and confident learners.
